A Debt Arrangement Scheme (DAS) can be considered by anyone who is living in Scotland and is struggling with unsecured debts. However this solution may not be suitable for everyone and whether it is right for you or not will depend on your individual circumstances.
Note: A DAS is only available for those living in Scotland. If you live in England, Wales & Northern Ireland this solution is not available and you will need to consider alternative solutions such as a Debt Management Plan.
The DAS can only include unsecured debts and you must have at least 2 unsecured debts which you are unable to repay.
One of the key questions to ask when considering a DAS is how long it will take you to repay your debt. You will be obliged to pay 100% of your existing debt so this could take many years if the amount you are able to pay is relatively small.
No additional interest cannot be added to your debts and it is possible to pay off your debt early if your income increases. However if your financial situation is unlikely to improve and you are worried about the time it will take to repay all of your debt, you might be better off considering an alternative solution such as a Trust Deed which allows for debt to be written off.
Homeowners may receive a particular advantage with the DAS as the solution does not require equity to be released from the property. However this advantage has to be weighed up against the fact that 100% of the existing debt will still have to be repaid.
A Debt Arrangement Scheme is not the only debt solution which might be suitable to resolve your debt problem. Before making your final decision to apply for a DAS you should also consider the other available debt solution options. For more information please see: Personal Debt Solutions
